Droning Of The Rain

Background

In 1994 I wrote the bass line used in this song. Along with members of my first band, I incorporated that bass line into a song called “Masquerading As A Love Song”. That song was…meh. We used to call it “Masquerading As A Good Song”. In 2003, Al Green released a new album, his first in decades…and all the songs sounded like they were cut in the 1970s. I adored this album, and it inspired me to take that bass line and to arrange it around a song that incorporated various Al Green song titles, as well as other classic soul song titles, into the lyrics. See how many you can identify.

Darby re-arranged the horns on this one, to very pleasing effect.

Lyrics

Verse:

Smooth as silk, a soulful brother
Sings sweet nothings to another
In the silence of a tender lover’s song.
Sweet as honey in the morning,
Words that melt her without warning
Flow from their bodies as they mingle with the dawn.
He says, “Let’s stay together,
‘Cause I’m still in love with you,
Even when there’s stormy weather,
And I can’t get next to you.
I really need for you to call me.
I’m so tired of bein’ alone.
Lay your head on my pillow,

Chorus:

And we’ll listen to the droning of the rain
On the window, ease all of my pain
With your touch.
‘Listen to the strains, now,
Of the music.
I sing this song for you,
‘Cause I really need so much for you to stay.

Verse:

On the stage a band’s performing,
And the women all are warming
For a chance to share a moment with their man.
But, her movements hesitate
As his words anticipate her troubles
And he gently takes her hand,
Saying, “Cloudy, don’t you drift away.
We can still pick up the pieces.
We haven’t spent some time person to person for so long.
I realize we’ve got work to do.
I’ve read that in the creases you have written in your smile,
But stay a while, and we’ll listen to the droning of the rain

Chorus

Verse:

On the station he has playing
There’s a DJ who is saying
The evening is devoted to her.
The words recall emotions
They held before an ocean
Of memories came between their worlds.
And now he remembers the reason he won’t go far.
That evening in September he saw a shining star.
He knew heaven must be like this.
He had to remain. So, he threw on a record
And they listened to the droning of the rain.

Chorus
